First Aid and Mental Health training
Anyone can be affected by a mental health condition either themselves or a family member, friend or colleague.
This awareness course is suitable for everyone as it provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a suspected mental health condition and the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost a person towards professional help.
All members of the public can benefit from this course and it is a great stepping stone into First Aid for Mental Health.
Syllabus
A range of subjects are covered including:
- What is First Aid for Mental Health?
- Identifying mental health conditions
- Providing advice and starting a conversation
Course Duration
This course runs over 4 hours. Ideally, the course should be run over one day, but we have the flexibility to accommodate your specific needs if you so desire, providing it is completed within 6 weeks of starting the course and the training sessions last for a minimum of two hours.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, Learners will be awarded the Ofqual regulated Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)/Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health at SCQF Level 4. This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
Assessment
The qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question paper. A Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. No external assessors are required.
Numbers
A maximum of 16 students can be accommodated on this course and all candidates must be a minimum of 14 years of age to qualify.
FAA Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)
Award in First Aid for Mental Health at SCQF Level 5
This course is suitable for everyone but has been designed to help employers to provide a positive mental health culture within the workplace and to provide learners with comprehensive knowledge on a range of the most common mental health conditions and the skills to be able to act should a condition be suspected.
Learners undertaking this course will be considered First Aiders for Mental Health and be a point of contact within the workplace to help and support those with a suspected mental health condition.
Building on the Level 1/4 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health this course introduces the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan which allows learners to provide their peers with comprehensive guidance and support for a suspected mental health condition. Learners will be able to provide signposting to professional help and support that person whilst they are receiving professional assistance.
This course also covers the effects of drugs and alcohol and provides learners with the skills and knowledge to assist employers in implementing a positive mental health culture to support employees within a workplace.

FAA Level 2 Award in First Aid for Youth Mental Health (RQF)
Award in First Aid for Youth Mental Health at SCQF Level 5
This course is suitable for anyone who actively connects with children such as parents, carers, teachers, youth group leaders and young adults.
The qualification has been designed with children and young people in mind covering areas such as depression, self-harm, eating disorders and bullying and will provide the knowledge and skills to identify a potential mental health condition, start a conversation, and provide support and guidance to professional help.
Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.

- Identifying mental health conditions

- Mental health conditions
- Drugs and alcohol
- First aid action plan for mental health
Course Duration
The minimum classroom contact time of 6-hours can be spread over a maximum of 3-weeks, ensuring that each session is a minimum of 2 hours.
Certification
A Level 2 Award (Level 5 in Scotland) in First Aid for Youth Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement.
The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
Assessment
The qualification is assessed through a written assessment paper and the practical demonstration of the first aid action plan for mental health. Learners must successfully pass both parts of the assessment to be awarded the qualification.

A maximum of 16 students can be accommodated on this course and all candidates must be a minimum of 14 years of age to qualify.
This course has been designed for First Aiders for Mental Health to refresh their skills and knowledge and to stay up to date with current events.
The course covers key topics from the regulated First Aid for Mental Health qualifications, including the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, how to develop a first aid action plan for mental health and ways in which people can improve their general wellbeing.

Course Duration
This course runs over 3 hours.
Certification
Although there is no formal assessment, the trainer will assess each individual ongoing throughout the course and issue a certificate of attendance.
Numbers
It is recommended that no more than 16 students attend this course. Students from the age of 14 can attend this course.
